Google Drive Not Syncing? Fixes in the Order That Works

Drive for desktop fails quietly — no error, just a file that never uploads. Seven fixes ordered from most to least likely, including the filename characters that stall the whole queue.

Google Drive for desktop fails quietly. No error, no alert — a file just sits there with a spinning icon while you assume it uploaded, and you find out three days later when a colleague says they never got it.

These fixes are ordered from most to least likely. Work down and stop when the queue clears.

Before anything: confirm it is actually stuck

Click the Drive icon in your system tray or menu bar. The panel tells you whether it is syncing, paused, or finished.

Two things people mistake for a failure:

  • Paused. Drive pauses itself on metered connections and on battery saver, and it does not make a fuss about it. If the panel says paused, resume it and you are done.
  • A large file mid-upload. A 2 GB video on a slow connection takes as long as it takes. Check whether the byte count is moving before assuming it is stuck.

Fix 1: Quit properly and restart

Not “close the window” — quit from the tray icon, then relaunch.

This works far more often than it should. Drive’s sync engine can end up in a state where it believes it is working and is not, and a genuine restart resets the queue.

Do this before anything more involved. It takes twenty seconds and resolves a large share of cases.

Fix 2: Check the filename

Windows refuses certain characters and Drive will not rename your file for you. If a filename contains any of:

\ / : * ? " < > |

…sync will stall on it and, depending on version, may stall the whole queue behind it.

Two more that catch people out: filenames ending in a space or a full stop, and paths longer than 260 characters. The long-path one is common if you have deeply nested project folders with descriptive names.

Rename the offending file and watch whether the queue moves.

Fix 3: Look at storage — and check whose

Drive stops uploading when the account is full, and the notification is easy to miss.

The part people get wrong: Google storage is shared across Drive, Gmail, and Photos. Your Drive can look nearly empty while a decade of Gmail attachments has filled the quota. Check the storage page for the account, not the Drive folder.

If you are syncing to a shared drive, the relevant quota may be the organisation’s rather than yours.

Fix 4: Free up local disk space

Downloads need somewhere to land. If your drive is nearly full, sync stalls in the direction you may not be watching — files coming down rather than going up.

Mirroring rather than streaming makes this worse: mirroring keeps a full local copy of everything. If your Drive is larger than your free disk space, mirroring cannot work. Switch to streaming in Drive’s settings, which keeps files in the cloud until opened.

Fix 5: Rule out antivirus and VPN

Third-party antivirus scanning every file in your Drive folder can slow sync to a crawl or block it outright. Add the Drive folder to your antivirus exclusions.

Corporate VPNs and strict firewalls are the other common blocker — some inspect or block the connections Drive uses. Test on a different network. If it syncs fine on your phone’s hotspot and not on the office network, you have found it and the fix is a conversation with IT.

Fix 6: Disconnect and reconnect the account

When nothing above works, sign out of Drive for desktop and sign back in.

Your cloud files are safe. Local files stay on disk. Drive rebuilds its index, which takes a while on a large Drive but clears out a corrupted sync database — and a corrupted database is the usual explanation when a specific file refuses to move while everything else is fine.

Before doing this, copy anything created locally and not yet uploaded somewhere outside the Drive folder. Reconnecting is safe in normal use; that precaution costs nothing.

Fix 7: Reinstall

Last resort, and it genuinely does resolve cases where the app is on an old or partially failed update. Uninstall Drive for desktop, restart the machine, install the current version, sign in.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose files if I disconnect my account?

No. Cloud files stay in the cloud, local files stay on disk. The only genuine risk is a file created locally that never uploaded, so copy anything unsynced elsewhere first.

Should I use mirroring or streaming?

Streaming for most people — it keeps files in the cloud until you open one, so your Drive can be far larger than your disk. Mirroring only if you need everything available offline and have the space for it.

Why does one specific file never sync?

Nine times out of ten it is the filename, the path length, or the file being locked open by another application. Close anything that might have it open, then rename it.

Does Drive sync while the computer is asleep?

No. Sync needs the machine awake. If you queue a large upload and shut the lid, it resumes when you return — it does not run overnight unless you prevent sleep.

How do I tell what is left to sync?

The tray panel lists files in progress and any that have errored. That error list is the first thing to read when something is wrong, and most people never open it.

The order that works

Quit and restart. Check the filename. Check both quotas — Google’s and your disk’s. Exclude the folder from antivirus. Then, only then, disconnect and reconnect.

Working in that order will resolve nearly every sync failure without a reinstall.
